One of the oldest and largest open-air museums in Europe is located on the banks of Lake Jugla. This museum is unique when compared to similar museums around the world with the fact that it began to collect its exhibitions before the war, and thus many of its exhibition objects are in very good condition. 118 historical buildings from all four of Latvia’s provinces Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale and Latgale, have been put on display at the museum. The buildings range in age and most of them were originally constructed between the 17th century right up to the 1930s. Find out in what type of saunas Latvians used to wash themselves, how people decorated their farmsteads and what type of blankets the Latvians of old wove to cover their beds. View the work of traditional craftsmen and try-out first-hand moulding pottery, weaving baskets, making honey or forging coins, or participate in traditional games the Latvians of old used to play.
Open-Air Museum has Tavern Restaurant on site. This has been a place for travellers to stop for a while, to have a meal and find out the latest news and rumours of the neighbourhood. Everything is genuine here: the Big Hall with the bread oven, the large chimney and the pastor's chamber. One can feel the smell of the past and the ancient stories are still alive here. Just like in 1841, bread is baked in wood-fired oven, preparing roasts, in chimney cook a proper rural soup. In here hostesses cooked dishes and Latvian stitched beer taste just as good as hundred years ago.

Jurmala is often called the “Northern Riviera”. Similarly to the Vidzeme coastal resort area northeast of Riga, Jurmala was formed by uniting several older fishing villages and swimming settlements. Similarly to the French Riviera, the opening of a railway line in the second half of the 19th century, which today runs the whole length of Jurmala and right through its heart, promoted greater numbers of visitors to the area and helped the spa culture to flourish. Over the years, the “Northern Riviera” feeling in Jurmala has only grown stronger. Today Jurmala is one of the few oases from the stress and chaos of our age, where one can still find that rare luxury of harmony between nature and the urban environment. The sea, the wind and stands of majestic pines calmly coexist alongside a vibrant cultural scene, a combination that inspires refreshes and enriches all who spend time here.
Jurmala is one of the few cities in Europe where one can not only breathe fresh seaside air but also enjoy the natural aromatherapy provided by pine forests. A third of the city’s area is forested, and in most places the beach is hidden behind a belt of pine-covered dunes. Here the forest has literally entered the city, bringing with it a sense of calm and harmony as well as a very welcome feeling of balance to the inhabitants and guests alike. One of Jurmala’s gems is Ķemeri National Park with its 8000 year old mossy high marshes untouched by human activity. 97 species of protected plants and almost 260 of Latvia’s 342 bird species can be found in the park, among them such rare birds as the Black stork, the Lesser spotted eagle, the White-tailed eagle and the White-backed woodpecker.
