Discover the history of Prague on a walking tour of the Old Town and historic Jewish Quarter. Follow your guide on a walk through the Old Town and stop at the statue that commemorates Franz Kafka's birthplace. Next, head into the historic Jewish Quarter (Josefov) to see the Old New Synagogue (Altneuschul), which dates to 1270 and is rumoured to hold the body of the mythical Golem. You’ll also visit the Old Jewish Cemetery, the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe and have time to look at the old gravestones.
Franz Kafka (1883–1924), a Czech writer who wrote in German, is one of the most significant figures of the 20th century. At the heart of his literary and real, world was Prague and it is to Kafka and Prague that the exhibition in the Hergertova cihelna (Franz Kafka Museum) in the Lesser Quarter, in the heart of Kafka’s native city, is devoted.
The long term exhibition The City of K. Franz Kafka and Prague was opened in Prague in during the summer of 2005. Franz Kafka was born in Prague on 3 July 1883, died in a sanatorium at Kierling on 3 June 1924 and was buried in the New Jewish Cemetery in Prague, Strašnice on 11 June. The exhibition opened in Barcelona in 1999, in 2002–2003 it transferred to the Jewish Museum in New York, and in 2005 it opened in Prague, in the unique Hergertova cihelna (the Herget Brickworks) on the Malá Strana (Lesser Town] bank of the river Vltava [the Moldau).
