Discover one of Latvia's hidden treasures, the Baroque Palace of Rundale, on a enjoyable day trip from Riga.
The Rundale Palace - is set amidst the fertile Zemgale Plains in the south of Latvia. The Rundale Palace ensemble, one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo architecture in Latvia, was built between 1736 and 1740 as a summer residence for Ernst Johann Biron, Duke of Courland and a favourite of the Russian Empress Anna Ioannovna. The palace was designed by the Russian court architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli and built under his supervision. After lunch head to Bauska Castle - the castle is located in the Town of Bauska, amidst picturesque scenery on a strip of land between the Rivers Musa and Memele, not far from the place where they flow together forming the Lielupe. The Bauska Castle ensemble consists of two parts. The oldest, a Livonian Order's castle, was built in mid-15th century, and only its ruins have survived. The newest, the residence of the Dukes of Courland, was built in the late 16th century. In the evening return to Riga.
Located just on the other side of the city canal, Forest is one of the newest additions to the ever growing scene of the contemporary Latvian cuisine – modern and gourmet, but rooted in the long culinary traditions of this country, a thing more and more visitors want to try besides just indulging in the rustic traditional food. Design is smart and cosy, with lots of light and feels quite natural, well after all it’s named after Latvia’s biggest treasure – it’s green gold – the forests.
