The route follows an Old Railway Trail that once served as a vital connection between the Atlantic Coast and the rural interior. Far from the hustle and bustle of City life, you will have ample time to soak in the calm and serene surroundings. Along the way, you will pass through charming Villages and enjoy stunning views of the Ave River including a crossing over the Medieval Bridge at Serves. Upon arriving in Guimarães, immerse yourself in its rich history by exploring the Medieval Town Centre with its quaint plazas framed by 14th Century buildings, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Guimarães Castle, the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. Climb up to the Battlements and Towers for breathtaking views of the City. A day of beautiful landscapes and typical Northern Villages awaits you! After a traditional breakfast, it’s time to leave Guimarães and head towards the enchanting Douro Region. Today’s route takes you South, cycling through local Villages enveloped by beautiful nature. As you travel along Portugal’s Romanesque route, you will encounter the Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro. Located in Felgueiras, this significant Benedictine Monastery, founded by D. Gomes Echiegues in 1102, is a highlight of the day. From here until Telões, some uphills will appear to challenge you. However once you arrive, it's time to recharge your batteries and delight in the local gastronomy. From here, you will face some uphills on your way to Telões, but the effort is well worth it. Upon arrival, take a well deserved break to recharge and indulge in the local gastronomy. Surrounded by lush landscapes, you are now on the Vinhos Verde Route. A moment of absolute serenity and peace. We are getting closer and closer to the impressive Douro Region, something you will notice as you pedal towards Baião, a small Town located near the Douro River. Today's journey not only offers stunning landscapes but also takes us through Amarante and across the Tâmega River via the historic São Gonçalo Bridge. According to legend, this Bridge was built by Saint Gonçalo of Amarante with the help of the local people and a series of miracles. The Saint is said to have moved massive stones and summoned Fish to feed the workers, making the Bridge a marvel of both engineering and folklore. As the day comes to a close, you will notice the landscapes begin to transform as you approach the Douro Region. After conquering the final hill, you will arrive in Baião, a quaint Village nestled in a Winemaking region with roots that trace back to Ancient Roman times. Meals: Breakfast
Today’s ride will take you deep into the Douro Valley. You will cycle from Baião towards Peso de Régua, surrounded by the immersive and tranquil landscapes of the Douro River. From the small Villages to the breathtaking landscapes over the Vineyards, you will have countless opportunities to admire the fascinating colours of the Douro River and Valley and take unforgettable photos along the way. Savour your final moments in Peso de Régua, where the region’s rich history, breathtaking scenery and celebrated Winemaking tradition seamlessly come together. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Start the day by leaving Peso da Régua, riding alongside the Douro River on a beautifully paved road, through Lamego, an elegant and infused Town with a Baroque style, full of monuments and interesting history to discover. Some of the most renowned sites are the Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão (the second oldest Chapel in Europe) and the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Today’s route is prepared to deliver astounding landscapes filled with the blue and green of the River and Vines, adding one more memory to take back home with you.
